MT-2, also known as melanotan II, is a synthetic cyclic peptide made up of seven amino acids. Its structure is based on part of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH).
Melanotan II activates several melanocortin receptor types, including MC1, MC3, MC4 and MC5. These receptors take part in different signaling systems, including pigment production and the regulation of energy balance. Laboratory studies use melanotan II to examine receptor binding and the cellular signals that follow receptor activation.
