MT-1, also known as melanotan I or afamelanotide, is a synthetic peptide made up of 13 amino acids. It is a structural analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH).
Afamelanotide activates melanocortin receptors, with predominant binding to the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1). This receptor is involved in signaling that regulates the production of eumelanin, a form of pigment. Research on the substance examines melanocortin receptor activity and pigment-cell responses.
